USING SOLAR ENERGY TO BRING CLEAN AND ACCESSIBLE WATER TO A REMOTE VILLAGE IN MADHYA PRADESH
Geographical Location: Majhora is a remote village in the Chhatarpur district in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.
The Issue: Majhora has no water during the summer months because its only well dries up. A local NGO Haritika built a well, or source of water, by blasting a rock 2kms away. However, there was no way of bringing the water to the village since there is no electricity there.
The Project: The goal of the project was to use solar energy power to pump water from the open well 2 km away and bring it to a water tank built in the village.
Social Impact: 1500 inhabitants of the village have easy access to clean water. Health improvements have been noticed and safety has increased dramatically. Women and children are relieved from the drudgery of fetching water for everyday needs.
Project Date: completed in April 2012
