USING SOLAR POWER TO BRING LIGHT TO HOUSES IN DEMUL VILLAGE IN SPITI VALLEY AT 4,400m above sea level

 

The Spiti Valley is a desert mountain valley located high in the Himalaya mountains in the north-eastern part of Himachal Pradesh

 

Geographical Location: Demul is 1.5 hours’ drive from Kaza, the capital of Spiti Valley, a valley deep into the Himalayas at 14,400 feet (Approx 4,400 m) above sea level

 

The Issue: The village of Demul has little access to conventional energy and is practically in darkness throughout the year after sunset.

 

The Project: To instal a micro grid system in Demul village in order to provide a solar-powered home light in every household and to instal a Solar Powered Vaccine Fridge at Kaza. The system was designed to provide three lights of 3.6 watts for 6 hours in each household which benefits 300 villagers.

 

Social Impact: Light in the evenings and night helped children to study more hours and provided adults with extra time to work increasing their income.
