Using Solar Water Pumping Systems to Provide Easy Access of water to Tribal Settlements in Jawhar, Maharashtra.

Geographical Location: Jawhar is a remote village in Maharashtra, 100 kms away from Thane, Mumbai.

The Issue: The outskirts of Jawhar is home to many tribal settlements. The tribal people live in small clusters of houses called “Pada.” The laborious journey to the only freshwater source is about 500m away from the “padas.” Although there is a single phase electricity supply available in some “padas”, the electricity was unreliable and inconsistent.

The Project: The goal of the project was to use solar energy power to pump water from the water source available 500m away and bring it to a water tank built in the village. Sunlit Future installed 5 solar pumps (1 in each of the 5 settlements)  to accomplish this goal, and their partnering NGO, Pragati Pratishthan, who funded this project, also installed a 5000 litre water tank to store the water so that clean, drinking water is available for them at their door-steps.

Social Impact: 500+ inhabitants of these tribal villages have easy access to clean water. Women and children are relieved from the drudgery of fetching water for everyday needs. Girl children get the opportunity to go to school and women have time to engage in social activities now.
