Using Solar Energy to Bring Clean and Accessible Water for Agriculture
Geographical Location: Hare Krishna Ashram is located 5 kms from the Vizianagaram town in Andhra Pradesh, India.
The Issue: Hare Krishna Ashram was started by the followers of His Divine Grace A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, Founder Acharya of the Hare Krishna Movement in the year 2005. Following the on-going political Telangana issue in the region, Vizianagaram often got affected by seriously interrupted power supply which increased risks of crop failure. This prompted Shrikanth Ji, Guru of the Ashram, to opt for solar power dependency for the Ashram’s mango grove.
The Project: The Ashram approached Sunlit Future to help them become an example of sustainability by using solar energy. The idea was to have a solar pump installed to bring water from a bore well for agriculture and use the water for 5 acres of mango plantation which they could not earlier irrigate due to high operational costs of the conventional electric pump. Sunlit Future offered to do the installation for free as their contribution towards materialising Swami ji’s cause.
Social Impact: Low cost farming and demonstrating sustainability in agriculture. Many farmers visit the Ashram everyday to enquire about the development. They are being exposed to reliable, affordable and robust solar water pumping solutions.
Project Date: completed in February 2014
